Hello,

For those of you who are having problems connecting to BioMOO:-

Most of these problems are probably be caused by firewalls. Either you
are not being permitted telnet access to external sites, or you are not
being permitted access to non-standard ports (such as BioMOO's port 8888).
If this is the case you will not be able to register via the BioGate
interface either.

These problems are (almost certainly) solvable. Systems people usually
deny access to such ports in case they are used for playing games ;) All
that should be necessary is for us to reassure the relevant people that
BioMOO is an essential part of the PPS course and/or for you to find (or
borrow) a "suitable" machine.

If you are coming in from a commercial domain, you have an account on a
University based machine and your problems are with the port no. you can
try telnetting to the University account and then from there to BioMOO.
Academic institutions are normally (slightly) more lax about these things.

Could those of you who are unable to connect to BioMOO please send me (not
the list ;) a 2-line message to let me know, so that I can see how serious
these problems are? (Please do this even if you have already sent us
messages.)

Finally, please don't worry about missing to-morrow's meetings. We don't
expect 100% attendance at BioMOOs and as there are a number of students
still completing the registration procedure I will be running another
introductory session in a few weeks' time.

Best wishes,

Clare Sansom
